Breakfast was so good! A great croissant second day in a row. If you’re ever in Hexham I heartily recommend the Beaumont Hotel.
We got our suitcases in the lobby by 8:30 as instructed in our material.

We sat outside to wait for our lift to Portgate, where we will start our walk.

Our luggage was in that car. And then our ride picked us up right on time.
Over the stile and off we go.

There’s sheep poop on the path. That’s understandable.

We walked, and walked. By road it wouldn’t have taken us very long at all.

At one point DH was attacked by four wild beasts.

We came across our first bit of wall. Our adventurous little friend was quite thrilled. And so were we. I don’t quite have the knack for selfies.

The path continued. Some places it was just a slightly trampled bit of grass.

Some places it was very well defined.

When we arrived at Chollerford we made a strategic decision. We would have lunch at a roadside spot and go ahead to Chester Fort. When we were done at the Fort we would backtrack to Humshaugh, where we were staying for the night. Otherwise we would arrive at our B&B too early. We are just such good walkers!
Arriving at Chollerford.

The Roman ruins at Chester was a cavalry Fort and was huge. The Roman soldiers stationed here were from Spain originally, and that same regiment was there for three hundred years. Any male children they had were considered soldiers of the Regiment from birth. Great museum. And important Roman baths.

The owner of the land in the early 1800s was curious about his property, did initial excavation actions and found a Fort buried beneath the turf. He found thousands of artifacts as well.

Afterwards we walked back through Chollerford to Humshaugh and found our B&B. It’s fabulous.

We have our packed lunch still, which we’ll have for dinner, but there’s an Inn down the road where we’ll go to mix with the locals.

The Fitbit says we’ve gone only 20,000 steps today, so it must be a long day ahead tomorrow. The weather was perfect. Looking forward to tomorrow.
Keep smiling, even when you pack feels heavy.
