Hadrian’s Walk – Day 5

Here we are on day five of a four day Hadrian’s Wall walk.

Last night, from the comfort of my cozy room, there was the sound of great winds and great rains. They continued until after breakfast when, just in time for our walking to start, the rain stopped. πŸ˜ƒ The wind continued all day, but the only rain we had was about half an hour in the afternoon.

We finished our wall walk today, with a total of 27.25 km. for the day. We are tired and achey but pleased with our accomplishment. We walked farther than we should have because of a couple goof-ups on the trail. A cow path can look an awful lot like the Hadrian’s Wall Trail.

This is the weather shot for first thing I the morning.

I didn’t take too many pictures today. These next two are DH’s pics of a mini gate and a mini door. There’s a smaller segment of the population here?

We found the black sheep of the family!

There are several honesty snack places on this section of the walk. You take what you want and they rely on you paying. There weren’t any on the East or central section of the trail.

There was a lot of mud on the trail today. We both changed our socks because of mud and water seepage. The rivers were muddy too. All from the heavy rain last night.

We enjoyed the scenery. I love the big oaks. There were no public washrooms on this section of the trip. I had to pee in the bush!

We got to larger and larger roads. Sometimes walking on roads and sometimes going over them.

The River Eden was our signal we were nearing the end of our walking. Can’t say I was unhappy about that. Each day seems a bit harder.

Our adventurous little friend did the entire trip with us. Here he is enjoying the relaxation afforded by an honesty box spot.

We have arrived in Carlisle and enjoyed a Greek celebratory meal. Yamas!

Things I have learned on this trip:

– DH and I are probably not of the same species. He can be comfortable walking in shirt sleeves while I’m cold zipping up my fifth layer of clothing.

– A pack that is quite light at 9am will feel twice as heavy at 10 am and four times as heavy at 5 pm.

– Sheep come in an endless number of varieties.

– There are as many reasons for flatulence as there are farts in the world.

Keep smiling, even when your feet, knees, back and hips all hurt. 😊
